Task 10, Electrochemical Systems, workshop on better battery performance in extreme temperatures

Task 10 held a one-day workshop on battery performance under extreme temperature conditions in Montreal, Canada on October 22, 2012, immediately prior to the EV 2012 VÉ conference & tradeshow on “The Business of Going EV”. The workshop was co-hosted with IA-HEV Task 15, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles, with cooperation from Natural Resources Canada.

Thermal management of advanced battery systems is critical to the success of electric vehicles because extreme temperatures can affect performance, reliability, safety, and durability of batteries. Drivers expect to be able to use electric drive vehicles year-round.

Critical to meeting this expectation is having advanced batteries, such as lithium-ion systems, perform consistently in summer heat and winter cold. Workshop discussions focused on these questions:

  • What are the real temperature requirements for batteries in light passenger vehicles?
  • What are the effects of temperature on batteries as measured by an experiment or predicted by modeling?
  • How can these effects be addressed, both through cell chemistry and design and through battery thermal management?

The workshop attendees addressed these questions through a combination of informal presentations followed by group discussions accompanied by performance data. Examples of different approaches for managing temperature extremes included the following suggestions:

  • Address low temperatures through vehicle storage in a garage, especially a heated garage.
  • Address temperature extremes at the battery level through cell heaters for low-temperature operation and cell cooling for high-temperature environments.
  • Improve cell performance at temperature extremes through modifications in cell chemistry, such as novel electrolytes.

Planning for future workshops is underway. Two separate workshop topics will be abuse tolerance of advanced batteries and the effects of fast charging on batteries and their safety that will be held in conjunction with IA-HEV Task 20, Quick Charging technology.

There is no cost to an IA-HEV member country to join Task 10, and there is normally no registration fee for the workshops sponsored by the Task. Each workshop is held as an independent event and participation in one workshop does not obligate one to future activities.
