Annex XVII aims to assess the current situation related to system management and monitoring in electric vehicles as well as the configuration of electric drive components and their interfaces. An optimized integration of the electric drivetrain into the vehicle can provide a significant contribution to the feasibility of electric propulsion systems.

Also, electronic systems involved in the operation and monitoring of vehicles have improved substantially in recent years. Not only have they gained importance in conventional transport systems, but they have also facilitated and improved the prospects for electric vehicles.

An additional aspect to consider within this Annex is the potential of new system configurations to address the specific opportunities and challenges of different applications and vehicle classes.

This Annex was formally started in June 2010 and its kickoff meeting is planned for October 2010.

Areas of work forseen in this Annex

  1. Electric Systems
  2. Vehicle Configurations
  3. Operating Strategies

The impact of each of the above on the vehicle performance will be assessed regarding:

  1. Improvement of energy efficiency (thermal and electric energy management optimization)
  2. Safer operation and higher durability of components through better monitoring of their operation
  3. Cost reduction
  4. Weight and volume reduction through optimized assembly of the drive train (improved spatial arrangement of the drive train)
  5. Optimization of the overall vehicle design adapted to the specific requirements and opportunities of electric vehicles for different applications and vehicle classes.

Working Plan

The planned activities within this Annex include:

  • Questionnaires, personal interviews, and workshops with industry representatives
  • Foresight analysis of future options and opportunities
  • Simulation of different component configurations and their experimental validation
  • International networking to include achievements of external partners (EU-Framework Programme 7, EU-Technology platforms, ERTRAC, EPoSS)
  • Close coordination with other relevant running annexes of the Implementing Agreement on Hybrid and Electric Vehicles
  • Dissemination of results in participating countries to give support to their policy and industrial decision makers and leading R&D representatives in their responsibility for setting research priorities and making investment decisions

Participants

  • Austria
  • Switzerland
  • United States of America

Upcoming Events

The kickoff meeting will be held together with the “Alternative Propulsion Systems - Vehicle Integration and System Optimization” conference that will take place in October 2010. Further information on this conference will be published at www.a3ps.at
